IDC Quarterly’s first issue for 2026 features articles by HeplerBroom attorneys Irina Dmitrieva and Anton Marqui.
In her Appellate Practice column, Dmitrieva discusses a case that underscores the severe consequences that can result when attorneys disregard pretrial court orders. The full article (“Ask Permission, Not Forgiveness: The Appellate Court’s Message to Trial Counsel in Harrell v. City of Chicago”) is available here.
In his Medical Malpractice and Healthcare Law article, Marqui examines the rulings in several cases that centered around the concepts of loss of chance and proximate cause. That article (“Appellate Court Rejects ‘Fatal Gap’ in Proximate Cause”) is available here.
Dmitrieva, a partner in the firm’s Chicago office, is a highly experienced appellate litigator with more than 20 years of success in federal and state appellate courts representing both private clients and governmental entities. Previously, she was the sole appellate attorney for the Chicago Transit Authority, represented the City of Chicago and its agencies in appellate courts, and practiced complex commercial litigation and appellate law at a large Chicago law firm.
Marquis, also a partner in the firm’s Chicago office, defends hospitals, long-term care facilities, physicians, dentists, and other healthcare providers in malpractice actions. He deftly manages all phases of civil litigation with successful results, from early dismissal to defense verdicts at trial. He has also achieved favorable outcomes through arbitration and mediation.
