A recent issue of For the Defense (the professional journal of the Defense Research Institute) features an article by LaDonna Boeckman on defending wound-care injury lawsuits. Co-authored by Martha Kelso—a registered nurse, Diplomate of the American Professional Wound Care Association, and Chief Regulatory Officer and founder of one of the nation’s largest mobile wound care providers—the article examines recent CMS regulatory changes. These changes support the need for an extensive assessment of the a wound’s etiology and discourage automatically classifying any facility-acquired wound as a “pressure” injury.  The article also offers practitioners guidelines for thinking through the evidence supporting whether or not a wound was caused by pressure. Boeckman, a partner in the firm’s Chicago office, works with medical professionals and others in the healthcare industry to make the complex simple and understandable for both clients and juries. Clients who have worked with her appreciate the time and attention she spends preparing them to testify both at deposition and at trial. She is the recipient of a Jury Verdict Reporter Trial Lawyer Excellence Award for an outstanding defense verdict in a dental malpractice matter.
