Gordon R. Broom joined the law firm now known as HeplerBroom in 1971. Prior to joining the firm, he served as Assistant Dean of the University of Illinois College of Law from 1969 until 1971. He retired in 2020.
Mr. Broom focused his practice on trials involving practically every area of personal and bodily injury litigation, including lawsuits involving medical malpractice, products liability, and maritime law, as well as general negligence. He represented a wide variety of clients from numerous industries—such as energy/utilities, insurance companies and their insureds, telecommunications companies, a national transportation company, and so many more—during his storied career. He tried cases all over central and southern Illinois and advocated in the appellate courts on issues of first impression in Illinois jurisprudence.
He served the profession as an active member and former State President of the Illinois Association of Defense Trial Counsel, National President of the Association of Defense Trial Attorneys, and President of the Eastern Missouri/Illinois Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates (a national organization). He also served on the National Board of the Defense Research Institute and the Board of Governors of the Seventh Circuit Bar Association, as well as being a long-time member of the Illinois Supreme Court Committee on Character and Fitness.
For most of his career, he was honored by his peers and the judiciary, both statewide and nationally, as a top skilled lawyer who practiced with the utmost integrity. Gordon Broom’s contributions to the firm and the practice of law will endure in all that HeplerBroom is and will become.
