Moch and Fay Secure Significantly Reduced Verdict in Personal Injury Case

Recently, a jury in the Law Division of the Circuit Court of Cook County returned a significantly reduced verdict in favor of one of HeplerBroom’s clients after a week-long trial before Judge Israel Desierto. The defense admitted liability in the motor vehicle collision injury case; at dispute was the extent of the injuries and damages. Although the plaintiff asked the jury for just under $200,000, including $104,000 in medical bills, the jury awarded him only $30,000, which included just $20,000 in medical bills. HB attorney Eric Moch was assisted in the trial by first-year associate Joseph Fay.

Moch, a partner in the firm’s Chicago office, focuses his practice on the investigation of and defense against organized insurance fraud, as well as insurance coverage and first- and third-party defense. He has tried in excess of 60 cases to jury verdict in state and federal court and has prevailed in oral arguments before the Illinois Supreme Court and Seventh Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals. He is also attorney of record in several published appeals. He has been named to the lists of Illinois Super Lawyers and Illinois Leading Lawyers, is a Past President of the Illinois chapter of the National Society of Professional Insurance Investigators, and currently serves as the “Law Update” columnist for SIU Today, the journal of the International Association of Special Investigations Units.

Fay, an associate in the firm’s Chicago office, also focuses his practice on insurance coverage and defense. He obtained his J.D. from the University of Illinois Chicago School of Law in 2021.
