Champlin and Hanson Obtain Summary Judgment for Municipality in Free Speech Claim
In October 2024, Matthew Champlin and John Hanson obtained summary judgment in Madison County (Illinois) Circuit Court in favor of a local municipality.
Plaintiffs alleged municipal officials denied them access to a public building, chilling their rights to free speech and ability to seek redress of grievances under the Illinois Constitution. Champlin and Hanson successfully argued there was no justiciable controversy. The Court granted summary judgment in favor of the municipality, expediently ending the litigation.
Both attorneys practice in the firm’s Edwardsville office. Champlin, a partner, focuses his practice on the defense of personal injury, products liability, municipal liability, and construction matters. He is active in pro bono initiatives and assisting litigants with limited resources.
