Wagener Discusses Legal Issues in Nursing with Senior Nursing Students

Susan Wagener has been invited to speak to senior nursing students at the University of Illinois Chicago School of Nursing in November. Wagener will discuss how to defend a professional license, including strategies to incorporate into a personal nursing practice to mitigate the risk for malpractice claims and professional license discipline investigations. Wagener and fellow HeplerBroom attorney Megan Janowiak will use case studies to illustrate the impact of civil and criminal matters on nursing care and professional licenses. They will also provide information on best practices to avoid similar issues.

Wagener, an attorney of counsel for the firm’s Chicago office, focuses her practice on health care professional licensure cases, medical malpractice, nursing home litigation, and general healthcare law matters. She regularly presents and publishes on topics related to malpractice risk management and defense of disciplinary matters. Prior to becoming an attorney, she was a registered nurse, specializing in orthopedic and medical-surgical nursing care.

Janowiak, an associate in the firm’s Chicago office, concentrates on the defense of medical and dental malpractice, personal injury, and professional liability matters. She is a 2022 graduate of Chicago-Kent College of Law and also holds a B.A. in English Literature and Philosophy from DePaul University. She was a 2021 HeplerBroom summer associate.
